The Rabbinical Council of America, the leading membership of orthodox rabbis in North America, mourns the passing of Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg, zt”l, noted rabbi, posek and rosh yeshiva.
Rabbi Goldberg was a leading Jewish legal scholar and decisor who served as judge on the Rabbinical High Court in Jerusalem, head of the Sadigura Kollel and editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia Talmudit. He delivered shiurim (lectures) at a wide range of institutions including Eretz Hemda, Or Etzion and Kerem be-Yavneh.
Rabbi Daniel Korobkin, RCA president, said, “Rabbi Goldberg was consulted widely by rabbis and laymen across the spectrum of Jewish life on the most challenging issues of Jewish law. His understanding of technology and medicine helped to determine Jewish legal practice in the modern age. He shunned politics and affiliations, favoring Torah learning for all. In addition, he was one of authorities who endorsed the Rabbinical Council of America/Beth Din of America’s halachic prenuptial agreement which has served as a safeguard for women who are refused a Jewish divorce.”
