Rabbi Dr. Michael A. Shmidman Named Editor of Tradition

Sep 5, 2001 — Rabbi Hershel Billet and Rabbi Kenneth Hain, President and Past President of the Rabbinical Council of America, jointly announce the appointment of Rabbi Dr. Michael A. Shmidman as Editor of Tradition Journal. Rabbi Shmidman succeeds Rabbi Dr. Emanuel Feldman of Jerusalem and Atlanta who was the editor from 1988. Rabbi Billet commented that “the Rabbinical Council of America and indeed the scholarly Jewish world are indebted to Rabbi Feldman for his devoted and dedicated work in guiding Tradition through the past 13 years. We look forward to Rabbi Shmidman’s building on Rabbi Feldman’s successes and making his own intellectual and editorial contributions to our Tradition.”

Rabbi Dr. Michael A. Shmidman serves as Rabbi of Congregation Keter Torah in Teaneck, New Jersey and as Dean of Touro Graduate School of Jewish Studies.

Rabbi Shmidman completed his B.A. and rabbinical studies at Yeshiva University, his M.A. in Jewish Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and earned a Ph.D. in medieval Jewish history from Harvard University where he also served as the Orthodox rabbi of Harvard Hillel. He is co-author of a Hebrew textbook on Maimonides, entitled Law and Philosophy: Perspectives on Maimonides’ Teachings, published by the Open University of Israel (2 vols., 1992-1995), and has written and lectured extensively in the field of medieval Jewish history and literature. Dr. Shmidman is a member of the Rabbinical Council of America, the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County, the Association for Jewish Studies, and the Medieval Academy of America.

Tradition, a Journal of Orthodox Jewish thought, is published by the Rabbinical Council of America, an international organization of Orthodox rabbis with offices in New York and Jerusalem.
