Jun 1, 1988 — RIGHTS OF SABBATH OBSERVERS
| WHEREAS one of the pillars of our democracy is the right of every citizen to earn a livelihood free from discrimination and to fully participate in American Political life, and WHEREAS initial steps have been taken to protect the employment rights of Sabbath observing Jews, such as federal and state laws which provide for accommodation of religious practices on the job, as well as regulations promulgated by the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as by several state human rights agencies, and WHEREAS determined efforts are still needed to ensure vigorous enforcement of these measures, their adoption in certain jurisdictions as well as the facilitation of access to the political process regardless of religious practices, The Rabbinical Council of America in convention assembled, COMMITS itself to be in the vanguard of an ongoing effort to secure legislation and regulations that would accord to the Orthodox Jews the right of public and private employment and political involvement free from discrimination, and NOTES the pioneering work in this area of the National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs (COLPA), and urges support of, and cooperation with this organization. |
