Response to Attacks on Orthodox Rabbinate

Apr 1, 1997 — The unfortunate vehemence with which Dr. Ismar Schorsch and Rabbi Eric Yoffe attack Orthodoxy and the Chief Rabbinate is indeed unfortunate. We shall not respond to such attacks, so as not to engage in a public polemic which demeans all Jews. For movements which have been castigating others for irresponsible rhetoric, the language which they employed comes as a very, very hurtful surprise. Such broadside attacks on the Chief Rabbinate which, from its inception, has brought honor to world Jewry, do a great injustice to an institution supported by the overwhelming majority of the citizens of the democratic State of Israel.
