January 7, 2023 – The Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) expresses shock and dismay at the deaths in Turkey and Syria of more than 5,200 people and the injuries to tens of thousands more caused by the earthquake in Turkey. These numbers will only continue to rise as rescue and cleanup efforts continue. We support the efforts of the world community in its efforts to rescue those who are trapped and to provide shelter and food to the survivors whose homes were destroyed.
Rabbi Binyamin Blau, president of the RCA, said, “We extend our condolences to the families and fellow citizens of those who died, and our prayers for those who remain trapped in rubble and who were injured. We regret that the president of the Jewish community in Antakya, Saul Cenudioglu, and his wife Fortuna, are presumed dead in the disaster and offer our sympathy and support to their family and community.”
Rabbi Zvi Engel, vice president of the RCA, said, “We are encouraged that Israel will send rescue teams, medications, and supplies to both Turkey and Syria. Israel recently reestablished ties with Turkey after years of diplomatic tensions and it is heartening to see renewed cooperation today.”
