RCA Mourns the Death of Rav Nota Greenblatt, זצ”ל‎

March 5, 2022 – The Rabbinical Council of America, the leading membership organization of orthodox rabbis in North America, mourns the death of Rabbi Nota Greenblatt, of blessed memory, one of the leading Torah personalities of American Jewry for over seven decades. Rabbi Greenblatt, a close disciple of Rav Moshe Feinstein, זצ”ל, also studied for a briefly under Rav Yosef Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik, זצ”ל. He helped build the Orthodox community of Memphis, TN from his arrival there as a young rabbi in 1949, and was legendary for traveling the length and breadth of the United States to assist in arranging gittin (Jewish divorces) and to perform other Jewish legal functions in communities that lacked the infrastructure to support a standing bet din (rabbinic court). Rav Nota, as he was affectionately known, was always ready at a moment’s notice to go anywhere to lend his expertise in Jewish law with compassion and concern, and to teach and train the younger generations of American rabbis. His passing represents the end of era in which many great Torah personalities lived in smaller Jewish communities and built Torah observant schools, shuls, and other institutions.
