May 25, 2022 – The Rabbinical Council of America, the leading membership organization of orthodox rabbis in North America, reacts in horror to the murders of 19 innocent elementary school children and two adults at the Robb Elementary School in Uvdale, TX yesterday, the deadliest school shooting since the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Uvalde now joins Rockford, IL; Albuquerque, NM; Sanford, FL; Pittsburgh, PA; Derwood, MD; Beloit, WI; Richfield, MI; Catonsville, MD; Minneapolis, MI; Olathe, KN; Desmoines, IA; Greenville, SC; Erie, PA; Washington, DC; Suwanee, GA; and Chicago, IL as the site of an elementary or high school shooting in 2022 alone.
Rabbi Binyamin Blau, president of the RCA, said, “Offering our condolences to the families of the murdered innocents, our prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured, and our support for the traumatized community are important responses, but are ultimately insufficient. Gun violence in schools and in our streets has reached pandemic proportions which must deeply disturb all people of faith and common decency. As religious leaders, we call upon all men and women of faith and good will to work across the political spectrum to create not only meaningful dialogue, but substantive actions that will protect the lives of all God’s children from gun violence, and ensure the safety and security of all of our citizens.”
