Oppressed Jewries 1989

Jun 1, 1989 — Oppressed Jewries

The Rabbinical Council of America in convention assembled reaffirms its solidarity with the beleaguered Jewish communities in lands of oppression, most especially the Jews of Syria, Ethiopia, North Yemen, Iran and Argentina and in other countries in the world where Jews are oppressed.

We call upon all governments of conscience to repudiate the scourge of anti-Semitism and to actively work towards the granting of full religious and political freedom to our brethren where such freedom does not presently exist.

We urge that the issue of the compensation of Jews from Moslem and Arab lands be on the agenda of any future peace arrangements in the Middle East.

We note with admiration the noble efforts of the American Syrian Jewish community on behalf of Syrian Jewry. We commend all people and agencies who likewise are working on behalf of our co-religionists in other lands of oppression. May they inspire us to action by their example.
