A native of Toronto, Canada, Rabbi Alter received his smicha from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University (RIETS) in 1997. He holds a Bachelors Degree from Yeshiva College and a Masters Degree in Medieval Jewish History from the Bernard Revel Graduate School.

Rabbi Alter is the Rosh Kehilla of the DAT Kehilla, where he serves as Head of School at the Denver Academy of Torah, and as one of the Rabbis of the DAT Minyan where he is the founding rabbi. He founded the DAT high school in 2010 as an extension of the DAT lower school. Prior to this position, Rabbi Alter served as Rabbi at the East Denver Orthodox Synagogue.

Rabbi Alter has been a member of the Rabbinical Council of America for more than twelve years and currently serves on the Executive Committee. He has served on the convention committee and has chaired the elections committee. He was also an RCA representative for the RCA mission to the United Synagogue convention in Britain in 2003.

When reflecting on why he enjoys serving in the rabbinate – Rabbi Alter had this to say:

"Imagine if you could make a list of important values in your life. Imagine, once again, that you were able to fashion a job description in which 80% of your time was focused on those values and their implementation. This is the beauty of the Rabbinate - the ability to spend all my time teaching and learning Torah, doing chesed, building community. Who could ever ask for more?"
