RCA Urges All Members of the Jewish Community to Cease Personal Attacks On Matters of Community Concern
| Jun 1, 1998 — WHEREAS, various segments of the non-Orthodox Jewish community have been actively seeking legitimization in Israel of their activities, especially in the personal status areas of marriage, divorce and conversion; and WHEREAS, members of those segments of the community have vociferously deprecated the offices and persons of the Chief Rabbinate and of Orthodox Jewry; and WHEREAS, it is only a universally recognized Halachic standard in matters of personal status that will maintain the integrity and unity of the entire Jewish community; and, WHEREAS, leaders and members of the Orthodox community have issued ad hominem attacks against other respected leaders of the Orthodox community with whom they have disagreed regarding the resolution of some of the crises that face our community, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Rabbinical Council of America calls upon all members of the Jewish community to cease and desist from personal attacks and uncivil speech in matters of community concern; that all members of the Jewish community learn to base their disagreements on principles and ideas, to respect the integrity of the others’ positions, and to enable halachically valid differences to be expressed; to refrain from pursuing agendas that, due to their halachic illegitimacy, can only serve to divide our people and create segments that cannot marry each other. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Rabbinical Council of America urges the Chief Rabbinate of the State of Israel to fulfill its promise to the Neeman Commission and to increase the number of Batei Din that deal with matters of conversion. These ramifications of this issue have been difficult and trying for world Jewry in the recent past. The Rabbinical Council of America urges the Chief Rabbinate to do all that it is able to assure that proper conversions conducted according to the strictures of Halachah are available to those who sincerely seek them and qualify for them. |
