Jun 1, 1998 — RESOLUTION REGARDING HEALTH CARE

WHEREAS, the Torah sets the obligation to protect human life as a value almost second to none; and

WHEREAS, most individuals rely upon insurance companies and managed care providers in order to afford the high price of medical care; and

WHEREAS, 16 per cent of the American population have no health care insurance; and
WHEREAS, managed care providers may restrict access to medical attention, procedures, and time in hospitals in ways that are detrimental to the life, health and well-being of patients; and

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Rabbinical Council of America calls upon the Congress of the United States to pass the Patient Access to Responsible Care Act (H.R. 1415, S. 644) as a means of guaranteeing health care to those insured by managed care providers, and to formulate legislation that will extend health care coverage to all Americans, and urges its members to organize and encourage political action in the forms of phone calls and letter writing to the appropriate officials.
