Saying Birchas Ha’gomel With a Minyan Assembled Over Zoom

לברך ברכת הגומל דרך זו”ם

המחבר כתב (רי”ט ס”ו) שלכתחילה מן הנכוןלברך תוך ג”י. ובמשנ”ב (סק”ח) הביא מרא”ה שלא נכוןלהמתין יותר מלמ”ד יום לברך, ע”כ נראה, שאם כבר הגיע יום כ”ה והמגפה עדיין במקומה עומדת, ואסור לאסוף עשרה ביחד (מפני הסכנה), שיש לברך דרך זו”ם, חדא, דע”פ פשוטו, אין הצורך לעשרה בתורת דבר שבקדושה (שנצריך שיהיו כולם בחדר אחד), אלא בתורת פרסומי ניסא והודיה ברבים, והיות שכל העשרה מקשיבים לו דרך הזו”ם (או דרך הטלפון בקונפרנ”ס קא”ל), בהכי סגי. ועוד דהמחבר הביא (בס”ג) מח’ הראשונים אם העשרה מעכבים א”ל. ועיי”ש בבה”ל ד”ה וי”א, שהביא מרעק”א שאפילו להסוברים שבפחות מעשרה שלא יצא אפילו בדיעבד, אין ברכתו לבטלה, דלא גרע מאחר (קרובו או אוהבו, ששמח הוא ברפואתו ובהצלתו, משנ”ב שם ס”ק י”ח) שרשאי לברך (כמבואר בשו”ע שמה מהגמ’) ואין בזה משום ברכה לבטלה (רמ”א שמה), כ”ש איהו גופיה.

Birchas Ha’gomel is meant to be recited in the presence of a minyan. It is best to recite this bracha within three days of recovering from a potentially life threatening situation, and it is improper to delay beyond thirty days. If it becomes clear that due to the danger it will be impossible to be in the presence of a minyan within thirty days, then one should recite the bracha over Zoom or phone conference with ten men watching or listening. This is possible because the requirement for a minyan is not the same as for
tefilah b’tzibur or krias haTorah, which are devarim shebikedushah and require a minyan gathered in one place. In the case of Birchas Ha’gomel, the purpose of the minyan is to publicize the miracle, and this can be accomplished even if the ten individuals are listening without being present in one room.
