RCA Mourns Death of Ariel Sharon

The Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) mourns the loss of Ariel Sharon, Israeli statesman and general, who served as the 11th Prime Minister of the State of Israel and who is considered the greatest field commander in Israel’s history and one of the its greatest military strategists. Mr. Sharon’s life and careers are intimately tied to the history of the State of Israel since the days of its creation. He fought valiantly and led troops in all of its wars as commander, general, Defense Minister and Prime Minister. A grateful Israel will always remember the stunning initiative he took in the Yom Kippur War in leading his troops across the Suez Canal without sanction from his superiors, but in doing so turned the tide of the war, and ultimately paved the way for the cold peace with Egypt that has prevailed to this day.

Rabbi Leonard Matanky, president of the RCA, commented, “Prime Minister Sharon was greater than life, and often at the center of great achievements as well as great controversy. We are grateful for the many positive contributions he made to the State of Israel and offer our condolences to his family and the citizens of Israel. We recognize especially the extraordinary care and attention provided to him by his family during the past eight years of life.”
