Rabbi Mitchell Cohen grew up in Chicago, Illinois. His high school training was at Telshe High School in Chicago and at Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee. He then attended Hebrew Theological College, receiving a bachelor's degree in Hebrew Literature in 1989 and semicha in 1990. The following year, he graduated from Jewish University of America with a Masters of Pastoral Counseling degree.

Rabbi Cohen has recently begun working as a Religious Practices consultant and visiting Chaplain for the State of Wisconsin Department of Corrections. In the past he has worked in Kashrut administration and geriatric chaplaincy in the Chicago, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Milwaukee communities. He currently serves as a Chair of the Wisconsin Council of Rabbis' Jewish Inmates Committee and also a their secretary/treasurer. In the mid-1990's, he served as the Secretary of the Chicago Rabbinical Council and on several of their committees.

As part of his career as a counselor, Rabbi Cohen has been involved with counseling Jewish addiction sufferers. He currently acts as Clinic Director of Holistic Mental Health Services, where he practices as a licensed mental health and substance abuse counselor.

He and his wife, Yocheved (nee Gurtenstein), are proud that they have dedicated their professional lives to small communities where they feel they can have a "hands-on" approach to kiruv and community building. They are blessed with five children, Chaya (Gad Winters), Bluma, Baylah, Zalman and Nechama.
