In Light of High Divorce Rates, RCA Pledges A Renewed Committment to Teaching About Marraige and Fatherhood

Jun 1, 1996 — WHEREAS, nearly 50 percent of all marriages in America now end in divorce and nearly 1 out of every 3 children are born out of wedlock, and
WHEREAS, these historically high trends account for the fact that nearly 4 out of every 10 children in America tonight will go to bed in a home in which their father does not live, a number that is historically unprecedented, and that fully 50 percent of all children in America will spend a significant part of their childhood living apart from their father,
and
WHEREAS, these trends are clearly at odds with the two-parent, married family ideal clearly outlined throughout the Torah and taught in Jewish tradition
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT
We, the leadership of the Rabbinical Council of America, solemnly declare our concern for the state of fatherhood and family life in America and

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT
As the religious leaders of the Orthodox Jewish community and as the guardians of the moral tradition of Jewish people across this country, we pledge a renewed commitment to the moral teaching of the Talmud and Torah regarding marriage and responsible fatherhood and
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT
We will encourage all of the rabbis and congregations affiliated with the Rabbinical Council to do more in terms of pre-marital counseling and traditional teaching regarding responsible fatherhood.
