Israelis Missing in Action (1999)

RCA Calls on the United States Government To Secure the Release of Israeli MIA’s

Jun 1, 1999 — Israelis Missing in Action

The Jewish community welcomed the return of the Western hostages to their countries, yet we cannot rest, as Israeli soldiers are still missing in action in Lebanon. We must remind the world that not all the hostages have been returned-Israeli Air Force navigator, Ron Arad, missing since 1986, has not returned and is believed to be held in Lebanon by a group associated with the fundamentalists of Iran. Israeli soldiers Zachary Baumel, Yehuda Katz and Zvi Feldman, captured at the Battle of Sultan Yaqub in Lebanon in 1982, are still missing in action. The Israeli government has been working towards their release, as have their heartbroken parents, who have been tirelessly laboring to obtain any help or infonnation that will lead to their freedom. If Syria is serious about peace with Israel, among the things that they must do to demonstrate their good faith is to secure the release of the MIA’s.

We therefore resolve that:

The RCA urge the United States government to use every appropriate channel to secure the release of MIA’s, and to release to tile Israeli government and to the families of the MIA’s any evidence related to the MIA’s and their possible fate. Our government must insist that Yassir Arafat keep the promise he made in December 1993 when he gave one half of Zachary Baumel’s identification tag to Prime Minister Rabin and promised to secure and deliver information about the MIA’s.

The RCA urges the United Nations and the International Committee for the Red Cross to give their fullest support to this as a humanitarian issue and as a measure that would promote true peace in the Middle East.
